Sold the family home and spent the last couple of years renting, looking after two great kids and juggling full time work, it hasn't been easy! Really the last few years have been about getting through, day by day but now I am a Westie, meaning I have moved to the Western suburbs of Melbourne from the East and absolutely loving it! I am all ready for the next chapter.

So what will the next chapter look like?

Exploring the Western Suburbs of Melbourne and all they have to offer.

Getting involved with what I can already see as a vibrant, engaged community - helping kids to settle in.

Looking at sustainable living while not impacting too much on the day to day. My partner and I have just bought an old house originally built in about 1900 (pictured in header). It has been renovated and extended but we would like to put in our personal touches with both design and improving the sustainability of the house and garden so looking at:

energy efficiency of the house to help keep the energy bills in check

solar panels

an edible garden, with composting and worm farms and maybe a few chickens

already has three water tanks

and last but certainly not least, upcycling vintage furniture and other items.

All the while juggling a busy lifestyle with kids, dog, family, friends and my job (I am sure there will be a few good posts about this, with me pulling my hair out)!
And keeping in mind how busy life is still want to try as much as possible to enjoy the day to day, enjoy the journey.

I sold my family home that I have been living in for over 10 years just before Christmas 2014. I had been planning on talking about the sale process, staging the house (sharing photos of this) and more as it was happening, but the decision to sell when we did happened very quickly, and then it was suddenly all systems go trying to get the house ready. Also the process itself was stressful and emotional as on some levels I didn't want to sell.

My two children and I have now moved though into a new place which we love and will make new memories in. We are unpacking and I am looking at ways to make the house homely and feel like us, a little harder being a rental so can't easily change things or put pictures up wherever (a little easier to do these days than when I last rented with Velcro strips) but I like the challenge.

I am enjoying getting all our personal items out on display again too and putting my bookcases back out. This has quickly made our new house feel like home, especially after living in what felt like a display home for so long.

That is one issues with selling and wanting the house to look the best for open inspections, you need to do a major de-clutter and remove most personal effects. I did want the house to look the best it can and 'staged' it to make it look open and bigger, a blank canvas but decorated enough to give others ideas and not have it too sterile. It looked great in the end but was hard to live in and maintain. One good thing about it though was as a friend of mine said 'the house doesn't seem like you any more' and she was so right, this helped with disconnecting and made it so much easier to move out as soon as it was sold as couldn't wait to move into somewhere and make it mine again.

So now we are happily in our new home, boxes still everywhere but enjoying making it ours. For this reason I am now ready to and wanting to look back on the process of selling and would like to share some things I learnt from it as I know some of you will have to sell your home at some point.
This is mainly because the last year has seen some big changes which required some adjustment.
My husband and I separated a year ago this week and have been living apart ever since. Now a year later I am looking at many positive new beginnings (and Spring is a good time for that). A sad one for me is getting the house ready for sale but looking forward to the adventure. Looking forward to the fun of staging the house and getting it in tip top condition (have just put in a new kitchen) and looking forward to creating and decorating a new home with my two children.

We are not selling the house until early next year so I am glad I will have six months with my new kitchen and of the house looking fantastic. It will also be nice to have a last Christmas and Summer here with lots of entertaining on the deck.

I keep telling myself it is just a house and that the people that live within are the most important. This of course is very true but still there are a lot of memories here as we have been living here 10 years and both my babies were brought home to this house.

Still it is all about the journey as they say and now I am starting in a new direction. Who knows what exciting possibilities the future may hold!Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-43201064617246318642013-05-12T19:40:00.001+10:002013-05-12T19:40:19.900+10:00A morning showWe have just had new windows put in at the front of our house and have not as yet put blinds or curtains back, this I was grateful for this morning when I got woken to see an amazing sunrise.
Reason being that close friends of mine are looking to buy and another friend is getting ideas for her new build.

I must say this is something I love doing as it gives me ideas for my own house and one thing I have learnt recently is less can equal more comfort and peace in a house.

If you have looked at house for sale recently or sold one of your own you would know that in many cases the houses are completely de-cluttered of personal stuff and in some then given the going over by an interior designer. Now the lack of personal items can make a house a bit sterile but if an interior designer has then gone through the house and added rental furniture and ornaments it can give you some great ideas for basic room looks.

I particularly liked a house I looked at on the weekend as it is a weatherboard like my house with a very similar layout.

Photos from domain.com.au

Love the frontage. Gives me ideas as we are in the middle of doing ours with new windows going in tomorrow.

Also love the neutral de-cluttered interior and am planning on making my lounge more like this one in terms of layout. My lounge will have more colour, (especially as we have a blue lounge and can't afford to replace it) and family photos though.

How peaceful does this bedroom look, love the window seat.

As mentioned we are getting new windows put in tomorrow in the front two rooms, being the main bedroom and lounge room, so I have just cleared these rooms out. On Friday once all is cleaned up I might just put things back a little differently and leave some things out completely.

Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-1632295292069685122013-04-29T12:08:00.000+10:002013-04-29T12:08:22.347+10:00Autumn colour inside and outI love this time of year, watching the trees around the neighbourhood changing colour. I particularly enjoy looking out at the centrepiece of our garden, a beautiful Canadian Maple.

As we head into the cooler months I have also added more of the warming colour red to my interior and the view of the Maple really sets this off.

Unfortunately in the last day the tree has lost a lot of leaves and anticipating this, last week I brought some small branches inside for decoration.

It is hard to believe that just a week ago our Maple still had some green. It has changed quickly.

I have also brought in some Manchurian Pear branches. Our trees haven't changed colour yet even though many down the street have.

It has been so hot in Melbourne and the heat is going to continue for another few days. The heat is really starting to effect me, the kids and the garden. My poor herbs, are dropping, even though I water them daily and they are in the shade.

Luckily I was able to get enough coriander and probably almost our last crop of cherry tomatoes for the season and make a refreshing salsa. This one is well worth making and can be eaten by itself or goes well on garlic / herb bread, lamb or chicken.

For the one pictured above I used:

14 cherry tomatoes

As many of you know even though an extension or house might have finished being built there is still lots to then do to make a house a home. This is what I am now going to focus on.

I had a good Summer break with the kids and now they are back at school and kinder, I have had a little head space and time to reflect.

A big thing for me is making our house a home, somewhere we feel comfortable, have fun and enjoy. Somewhere family and friends love to visit and spend time with us. The same goes for the garden, we would love a mini oasis in the middle of suburbia.

Over Summer holidays I quickly realised a few things, to have a comfortable home you want it to be cool and shaded. There is lots of sun about and so was glad we got the solar panels in. For the garden water is obviously a necessity so hence a good size water tank. Other factors will come into play in Winter, so I am looking at sustainability measures to make our house comfortable all year around. This will also help keep the heating / cooling bills down.

The other thing I took in is with a lot of entertaining and the kids being home over the holidays we wasted a lot of fresh food by buying too much and then it spoiling before we ate it. So now I not only want to make a beautiful garden but a productive one. This has started with my bumper crop of cherry tomatoes which the kids, hubby and I not only enjoyed eating but the kids loved planting and picking them too. This also brings up the topic of fun things to do with the kids around the house and garden, another focus for my future posts.

Over Spring and Summer we have been working on our garden and thinking ahead we have started to plant tress that will not only grow to hide the fence and look good but will eventually grow fruit, our mini orchard in the middle of suburbia (see picture below-planting was something Hubby and son enjoyed together).

So with all this in mind I hope you can join my journey of making my house a home and my garden a productive one. I am also aiming to come up with some great recipes, that use the fresh produce we have grown. I would love it too if you could share ideas with me along the way. So stay tuned for my garden to plate posts.Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-47557470493162610292012-10-30T20:54:00.002+11:002012-10-30T20:54:49.212+11:00Pool next to the deck!I finally got to use a pool next to our new deck, well paddling pool at least!

Today it was finally hot in Melbourne, the first really hot day since we have had our wrap around deck put in, so we finally got to use the deck in the way I imagined.

These photos were taken around 12ish when the Maple in the middle of our
garden was giving good shade. A little later in the day the extension
gives the shade to this area, so perfect place to set up a pool.

Our deck was finished in May this year when Winter had already set in, so all these months later we are now finally getting the chance to use it in so many different ways.

Tomorrow I plan to plant my new Olive tree you can see on top of the wine barrel here. I will share more photos in my Friday food and flower post.
Now it will all be easy to make things that I can do with the kids.

So as Halloween is only two days away we just made paper lanterns, treat bags and ghost lollipops.
She then put her little trick or treat message inside along with a lollipop and presented it to me, her brother and Dad. She is our creative child and I love her gifts, they always make me smile.

I often find inspiration from walking past cafes and this is no exception. Love the colour pop and at the moment I am trying to introduce yellow, red and orange into my home and garden. 'Go on it's the weekend so get your hands dirty.'

Ok this is my Friday food and flowers post a day late but what a hectic week it has been.

My first week of not doing paid office work and it has flown. I thought I would have all this spare time but no, with a list a mile long of things I wanted to get done and with my daughter home from school for two days (she strained her quad muscle playing basketball, a big deal for a six year old), I didn't get to the blog much at all.

I did however manage to pot some basil and flowers plus mulch my lemon tree. I am looking forward to using the basil in summer salads, pasta, and on pizza.

It is obviously going to be a while before I get lemons and I plan to pot at least one other lemon tree, as there are so many things I love to make with lemon in.
I love this time of year where I get to decorate the house for various festivities, Halloween being the first cab of the rank. I must admit though with Halloween I not a big fan of some the decorations (thinking skull and crossbones) but love the pumpkins and the burst of orange they provide to the house.

These pumpkin candles go so well with the tulips Hubby bought me for finishing work last week. Only thing is I don't think these tulips will survive to Halloween so might have to get some more!
The kids are getting so excited about next week and I am sure there will be a few more photos to share then, especially as we are going to try and make some Halloween decorations and treats ourselves.

Well I certainly am and after finishing my job last week and already thinking what next? I have had a few people say just relax for a few weeks, take some time out for yourself while the kids are at school and kinder. Good advice but find this a very hard thing to do.

I started off well this morning going to the gym and then to one of my favourite places, Bunnings but now at home and looking around at all that needs to be done and just feel I should get started on organising the study, cleaning out cupboards, weeding, painting and oh so much more that I have been putting off. Sigh!

It is however a beautiful day outside and I am kid free, so maybe I should go out for a coffee and read a mag, oh and maybe visit Spotlight! Even if I do manage to do this I know later tonight once the kids are in bed I will start writing a plan for what to tackle over the next few months. I just can't help myself!

What about you, do you find it easy to relax or are you a plan and project person like me?Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-69651643024878456152012-10-16T19:04:00.000+11:002012-10-16T19:04:08.876+11:00Gardening and nature great for frustration

'Cleaning a house with young children at home is like eating a chocolate biscuit while brushing your teeth!'

This statement felt like it was written for me today. Oh the frustration! So instead of getting too annoyed I got the kids out of the house.

Firstly tried the garden and while they jumped on the trampoline and ran around, I weeded. This lasted well for an hour but then they started tipping cat food out on the deck and more.

So next we went for a picnic in a beautiful nearby park. Played hide and seek in the maze and went exploring in the gardens. Lots of fun, got rid of some energy and while they had a rest back at home I felt revived. Getting out in nature is the perfect therapy.

Now I feel more relaxed to head into my last two days of work - see yesterday's post.Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-35419100721021824322012-10-15T20:26:00.000+11:002012-10-15T20:26:08.901+11:00My last week - Blogtoberfest day 15One thing Blogtoberfest provides is a commitment to posting every day in October and so setting aside time to be creative, this I love. However the last few days I have slipped a little as I am distracted with the fact this is my last week of work for a while.

I have been in my current job at an environmental organisation working in public relations, marketing, communications for 10 years now. The organisation has just gone through a restructure and down sized and it has become time for me to move on.

I am excited in many ways as hopefully head in a slightly new direction, something where I can be a little more creative again, but in the mean time I will have a break and have more time to focus on the family, me and the house for a while. Something I have been hanging out to do.

So even though I am excited I am also a little sad and very distracted this week, which means my writing flow is not as good as it normally is. I will still post but maybe not every day at least until this week is over.

Have a good week all.
So a trip to Bunnings where I bought both food and flowers.
I love Rosemary, both the look in a pot and smell and taste in cooking. I use this herb a lot with a favourite dish of mine being crunchy roast potato with Rosemary and sea salt. Mmm, my mouth is just watering thinking about it.

I have recently realised that my beautiful boy, my second born has no wonderfully bound photo books of his first few years, though his older sister does. I have certainly taken plenty pictures of my now four year old but haven't put them together in anything with words.

I know my younger sister always complained there are a lot less photos of her and I think this happens a lot with the second child. I always swore I wouldn't do this with mine and I haven't in the extent that there are lots of photos of my boy, it is just I haven't seemed to find the time to order them and write captions like I did for the first couple of years of my daughters life. I think I will get onto fixing this very soon!Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-37493857249673611662012-10-10T19:08:00.001+11:002012-10-10T19:08:24.995+11:00Storage solutions - Blogtoberfest day 10Now in the middle of Spring (though with the weather in Melbourne you wouldn't know it), I have decided it is time to get a little organised and do a Spring clean. So been busy looking for some storage ideas for different areas of my home.
The three photos below I love for toy storage ideas. Especially a fan of the magnetic strip for cars as my four year old boy has so many Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars and they just seem to keep multiplying.

It seems that Halloween has become very popular in our area of Melbourne. It was only a few years ago that it was hardly thought of but this year we have already received a couple of party invites. Plus as soon as it hit October 1 people started decorating in preparation. I must say I am a little excited about it.

The one thing though I am not so sure of is a notice I got in the letterbox the other day saying I have to put my kids names on a list if they want to go 'Trick or Treating'. On top of which they have to go between 6pm and 7pm and only in certain streets. This does seem a little over the top to me, especially as we won't even be home from work until 6.30 but my kids would love to go. If we start at 7pm does that mean people won't open their doors? I personally am happy to have people come later, especially older children who I imagine would like to go when it is dark.

Last year I actually had some people rock up at our door at 8pm and when I opened it the first thing the mother did was apologise saying "I know, I know, we are not on the list.' I didn't know what she was talking about and was quite happy just to have 'Trick or Treaters,' but now I know why she was concerned as apparently some of the neighbours like the strict organisation, and she was told off! Mmm I suppose I better not miss the curfew then as much as I would like too!

Is Halloween big in your area and if so is it this organised?

Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912333781855333557.post-82464706255134944912012-10-08T18:52:00.000+11:002012-10-08T19:12:11.359+11:00Do entertaining and young children mix? - Blogtoberfest day 8I love to entertain and when we designed our extension and new deck I kept this very much in mind, the only thing is I also love to present a tidy and clean house, have it looking its best when people come over.

Now since having kids I have had to try and not worry about the high cleanliness standards I have set myself and managed to do this in the 'old house' (not easy for me). But when showing the renovated house to people who haven't been over for a while I have slipped, it has brought out the clean perfectionist in me again.

As many of you would know with a six and four year old around things don't stay tidy for long and I have found myself in the past week in this constant state of rushing around after them cleaning as I have tried to catch up with friends I haven't seen in ages. Now this is a recipe for stress and exhaustion as I have discovered with my focus on getting the house ready the kids have reacted as kids do.

So in one day last week 15 minutes before my morning visitors I came out of the shower to find the kids had got all the DVDs out and placed them all around the lounge. Then half an hour before my afternoon visitors I went outside for five minutes to tidy the back garden and came back in to find my four year old had thrown soggy toilet paper all over the bathroom! Now I am smiling while I write this, but I certainly wasn't too happy when these episodes happened.

So what is the lesson for me, entertain less to stop these stress causing episodes or somehow just relax? What about you, do you go into a flurry of cleaning before people come over?

I must say that I do have a couple of friends that come over regularly and with them I am quite relaxed about the state of the house. How do I get like this with others?
So following on from yesterday I thought I would share pictures of what I think are great buys from a store in the main street of Daylesford.
I had been looking for things to not only decorate our new deck with for ages but also a simple rustic inexpensive table that would go with the chairs I bought from Bed Bath and Table. I thought this table at $70 was a bargain!

The other weekend I spent time in Daylesford and surrounds about an hour and a half outside Melbourne. Firstly a stunning area, spa country, rolling green hills, old stone buildings with plenty of homeware and antique stores which I just can't help visiting (and this trip bought a few outdoor pieces which I will show in my next post).

My main inspiration this time though came from a Lavendula, Swiss Italian Farm where I couldn't stop taking photos.
I love the rustic, country style and as always a big fan of Olive Trees in terracotta pots. Being at Lavendula took my mind back to Tuscany which I absolutely love. Unfortunately the Lavender wasn't in bloom but love the Rosemary.
'Go on it's the weekend so get your hands dirty' - Real Living magazine

I love this quote near the end of every Real Living magazine, just before they have their gardening section. And so like this mag and many others which focus on food and gardening at the back of the mag, thought every Friday being the end of the week I would focus on food and flowers, friends or I are growing in our gardens.

With the food we are growing I hope to then use in cooking and flowers to decorate the table or house. Mind you sometimes the food itself, I'm thinking fruit and herbs particularly make good table decoration too.

So for my very first food and flower post my little vegetable and flower patch....

What are you growing in your garden, planted anything recently in hope of a good food crop?

With school holidays this time round I have been trying to get a little more creative with the kids. My daughter being in grade 1 is really starting to read and write a lot more and to encourage this I try to get her to make things that she will enjoy doing. Hence these beautiful invites she made just to have a few friends over for afternoon tea. These were given out proudly by my darling girl on the last day of school. And for the whole first week of the holidays she was getting very excited with the anticipation.

Lots of fun had by all and my daughter just loved the whole thing from invite making to the day itself. Especially as it was a special girl day with her brother elsewhere. So something really simple for me to do, but a great success!Georgyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12286499490797650792noreply@blogger.com1
